Your friend John (self portrait)
John Davenport (a.k.a. “THE John Davenport”) is an Austin-based songwriter, singer, and guitar player. He describes his music as outlaw folk or y’alternative country.
Why the THE?
Many rumors (started by John) explain the THE in his moniker. The truth (he claims) is: “The asking price for a dot-com site with my name in the URL was $5,000! I tried several other variations, all of which were taken. On a whim, I added the “THE” and voila!”

Who’s your friend?
On stage, John introduces himself simply as “your friend, John,” adding, “If we’re not friends before the show starts, hopefully we will be before it’s over.”
John describes himself as a singer-songwriter who dreams of being a songwriter. “The difference,” he says,” is a singer-songwriter performs his own songs, whereas other people—often younger, prettier, and more talented people—also perform a songwriter’s songs.”
